Mesh: A User-Shaped Lampshade Revolutionizing Interior Design

Designers Patrick Iu and Mattias Chrisander Create an Interactive, Unique Lighting Solution

Mesh is a flat-pack lampshade that arrives only 0.5mm thick. The end-user can then shape the lampshade into any form they desire, making each product unique. The lampshade can be expanded up to 15cm in height and is 300mm in diameter. The design also allows for two products to be connected, creating both a top and bottom part, with an integrated system for fastening the two parts together.

The inspiration for Mesh came from expanded metal, with the designers aiming to increase the volume of the product while using as little material as possible. The choice of copper as the material was twofold; for its softness and its natural reflective properties. The result is a lampshade that not only functions as a light source but also as a decorative piece that can be shaped to suit any interior design style.

The realization of Mesh involved extensive testing to determine the optimal pattern for cutting the copper. The designers settled on a plus pattern, which was most efficient for production using a water jet. The plus pattern also provided the best expanding possibility and created an appealing pattern when the lampshade was shaped.

One of the significant challenges in the design process was determining the shape of the lampshade. The designers tested almost 20 different shapes before deciding on a circular shape. This shape was chosen as it could easily be shaped into a dome and was neutral enough to match with other items and shapes in the surroundings.

The design of Mesh is protected by a priority certificate from Messe Frankfurt, backed up by the Federal Minister of Justice in the official electronic Federal Law Gazette. This protection ensures that the unique design of Mesh remains exclusive to Patrick Iu and Mattias Chrisander.

Mesh is more than just a lampshade; it's a design experience that allows the end-user to shape their own unique lighting solution. This innovative approach to design has earned Patrick Iu and Mattias Chrisander the Silver A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2017, a testament to their creativity and technical expertise.
